Motor Talk Monday – UL Listed vs. UL Recognized

#MotorTalkMonday – UL listed vs. UL recognized

When it comes to hazardous location motors, understanding UL certification is key:
• Division 1 motors must be UL Listed, meaning the entire motor is tested and certified by UL as explosion-proof.
• Division 2 motors use UL Recognized components — the motor is designed to meet Division 2 standards, but the full unit isn’t UL Listed.

Nameplate clues:
• Division 1 motors carry the UL Listed logo.
• Division 2 motors do not show the UL logo, but will clearly state “Suitable for Class I, Division 2″. Look for the UL Recognized mark (a backward “R” inside the UL symbol).

Important rule of thumb:
Division 1 = UL Listed (whole motor tested)
Division 2 = UL Recognized (components tested, motor design meets Div. 2)

Bonus tip:
• “Division 1” doesn’t need to appear on the nameplate; its enclosure is automatically suitable for both Div 1 & Div 2.
• “Division 2” must appear on the nameplate; it’s only suitable for Div 2 locations.

When you need a motor, be sure you know which division you’ll need, and look out for the UL symbol!
