When selecting an electric motor, horsepower, voltage, and enclosure type often get most of the attention. However, the installation environment is just as important. One factor that’s easy to overlook is altitude.
Why does altitude matter?
Electric motors rely on the surrounding air to remove heat. As elevation increases, the air becomes less dense. Because there is less air moving across the motor, cooling becomes less effective.
Even if the ambient temperature remains the same, a motor operating at higher elevations may run hotter than the same motor installed at sea level.
When does it become a concern?
Standard industrial motors are generally designed to operate at elevations up to approximately 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) without requiring special consideration.
Above that elevation, the reduced cooling capacity may require changes to the motor selection or application.
Depending on the installation, solutions may include:
- Derating the motor’s output
- Selecting a larger motor frame
- Using additional cooling methods
- Consulting the manufacturer for application-specific recommendations
Plan ahead for reliable performance
High-altitude installations aren’t common for every application, but they’re important in industries such as mining, water systems, and mountain facilities.
Considering altitude during the selection process helps ensure the motor operates within its intended temperature limits, improving reliability and extending service life.
