#MotorTalkMonday – NEMA frame suffixes
When it comes to electric motors, the NEMA frame size tells you the physical dimensions, but the suffix adds important details about mounting, shaft, and enclosure features. Choosing the right suffix ensures proper fit and function—especially when replacing or specifying motors for OEM equipment or retrofit projects.
Here are a few common NEMA frame suffixes:
• T – Included as part of a frame designation for which standard dimensions have been established.
• C – Type C face mounting on drive end.
• Y – Special mounting dimensions. (Contact the manufacture for dimensions.)
• Z – All mounting dimensions are standard except the shaft extension(s). It is also used to designate double shaft extension(s).
• D – Type D flange mounting on drive end.
• U – Previously used as part of a frame designation for which standard dimensions had been established.
• J – Jet pump motor.
• S – Standard short shaft for direct connection.
