Motor Talk Monday – Calculating Shaft Height via Frame Size

#MotorTalkMonday – calculating shaft height via frame size

Did you know that, for some motors, you can calculate the shaft height of a motor just by looking at its NEMA frame size?

To decode NEMA frame numbers for shaft height, divide the first two digits of a three-digit frame number by 4, or divide the two digits of a two-digit frame number by 16. For example, a 284T frame has a shaft height of 7 inches (28÷4=7), and a 56 frame has a shaft height of 3.5 inches (56÷16=3.5).

Please note, this rule only applies to NEMA motors—IEC motors do not have the same standards! And when in doubt, it is always best to double check.
