Motor Talk Monday – Does a 110V Motor or a 220V Motor Use Less Energy?

#MotorTalkMonday – does a 110V motor or a 220V motor use less energy?

There was a topic in the June issue of Electrical Apparatus that addressed the common question of whether 110V or 220V uses less energy. Some people may believe that one voltage consumes more energy than the other. However, whether it’s 110V or 220V, the energy usage is actually the same.

Energy is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh), so the key factor is wattage consumption.

It’s true that a 220V motor draws less current than a 110V motor for the same load. However, the total wattage—and therefore the energy consumed—remains the same. That said, the circuit breaker, motor starter, and feeder conductors for a 220V system can be smaller due to the lower current, potentially offering some one-time cost savings.
