#MotorTalkMonday – motor lead quantity
Why do some three-phase motors have different lead counts?
The number of leads in a three-phase motor isn’t random—it’s determined by winding configuration and voltage rating, impacting flexibility, starting methods, and voltage adaptability.
• 3 Leads – Typically found in single-voltage motors, permanently wired in Wye or Delta.
• 9 Leads – Common in 230/460V dual-voltage motors, allowing series (high voltage) or parallel (low voltage) connections.
• 12 Leads – Often used for Wye-Start/Delta-Run motors, reducing inrush current for smoother startups. Some 12-lead motors are also designed for multi-speed applications.
Knowing your motor’s lead configuration can help ensure proper installation, optimize performance, and prevent costly mistakes.
