#MotorTalkMonday – replacing vs. rewinding a motor
When a motor fails, the big question is should you rewind or replace?
When faced with this decision, here’s a helpful cheat sheet:
Rewind when:
• The motor is large, custom-built, or has long lead times.
• The stator and rotor cores are in good condition.
• Repair costs are significantly lower than replacement.
Replace when:
• The motor is old and inefficient.
• Repair costs approach the cost of a new motor.
• Energy savings from a new motor justify the investment.
A good rule of thumb is:
Small motors (<10 HP) → Usually replace.
Medium to large motors (>10 HP) → Evaluate based on cost and condition.
If it’s time for a replacement, upgrading to NEMA Premium® or IE3/IE4 efficiency classes can deliver long-term savings and reliability.
