Motor Talk Monday – Protecting Vertical Motors from Water Ingress

#MotorTalkMonday – protecting vertical motors from water ingress

When it comes to vertically mounted motors operating outdoors, water ingress is a primary concern – especially when gravity works against us.

Vertical Shaft Up:
In this orientation, rainwater can travel down the shaft and enter the motor. To combat this, our Dome Slinger, as featured on the 661XL and Cooling Tower Direct Drive motor lines, spins off water before it can breach the motor housing. This is particularly effective because a standard labyrinth seal can act like a funnel in this position.

Vertical Shaft Down:
Here, rain can pool on the endplate, potentially entering the gap between the shaft and endplate. A Drip Cover serves as a shield, preventing water from collecting and seeping into the motor.

Both Dome Slingers and Drip Covers can be added during the motor quoting process or retrofitted to existing motors in the field.
