#MotorTalkMonday – what is an IP rating or code?
The Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, developed by the IEC, help measure how well electric and electronic devices resist dust and liquids. These ratings provide clarity on durability and environmental protection. For SP4 motors, the IP code can be found on the nameplate, and the IP code for the motor lines other than the SP4 can be found in the 501 catalog.
How IP Ratings Work
Each IP code has two numbers:
– First digit: Protection against solids (0 = no protection, 6 = dust-tight).
– Second digit: Protection against liquids (0 = no protection, 9 = high-pressure hot water).
Based on IEC 60529, the standard defines tests to verify these protections, ensuring consistency across industries. First published in 1976, it remains the benchmark for evaluating device enclosures.
