Motor Talk Monday – Divisions vs. ATEX Zones

#MotorTalkMonday – What is the difference between UL Divisions and ATEX Zones?

If you’ll remember from a couple weeks ago, we discussed the differences between UL Division 1 and Division 2, but another term that is heard sometimes is ATEX Zone. Similar to our NEMA vs. IEC discussion a few weeks ago, these terms are related but have slightly different meanings, and are primarily used in different parts of the world.

Understanding hazardous area classifications is key to ensuring safety and compliance. Here’s a quick look at the differences between UL Divisions (North America) and ATEX Zones (Europe) and their connection to NEMA and IEC standards:

Divisions (North America):
• Classifies areas by the frequency of hazards.
• Division 1: Hazards present in normal conditions.
• Division 2: Hazards present only in abnormal conditions.
• Often linked with NEMA enclosure ratings for equipment protection.

Zones (Europe)
• Offers more detailed hazard classifications.
• Zone 0: Continuous hazard presence.
• Zone 1: Hazards present in normal conditions.
• Zone 2: Hazards occur occasionally.
• Aligned with IEC standards for global equipment protection.

Both systems prioritize safety but differ in approach. Click here to see a map and more detailed information about hazardous standards around the world.
