#MotorTalkMonday – DC to AC conversion
When looking to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs on a DC motor, replacing it with an AC motor is often the best solution. There are several benefits to converting a DC to an AC, including:
• Less maintenance – While both AC and DC motors require periodic regreasing of the motor bearings, DC motors require additional maintenance that AC motors do not, such as periodically replacing the carbon brushes and cleaning and refinishing the commutator.
• Lower operation costs – While a DC drive will have a power factor inversely proportional to speed (meaning a reduction of speed results in a poorer power factor), an AC variable frequency drive will have a high power factor at all speeds.
• Continuous operation at zero speed – Both AC and DC motors are capable of producing full torque at zero speed, however the DC motor cannot produce full torque continuously at zero speed like the AC motor can.
ABB’s RPM AC product line is designed to replace DC motors seamlessly by matching the DC footprint as much as possible. With the power dense design of the RPM AC motors, efficiency, power factor, and weight are all improved, in addition to all of the benefits listed above.
